ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Authorities intercepted more than 200 boxes of imported cigarettes believed to be smuggled from Indonesia in a maritime operation conducted by the Philippine Navy in the waters off Sultan Kudarat province.

The contraband was seized aboard the BRP Herminigildo Yurong, a naval vessel patrolling the seas under the jurisdiction of Region 12. The intercepted cargo was later brought to Naval Station Romulo Espaldon in Zamboanga City for further inspection.

Agents from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Region 9 (PDEA-9) conducted an inspection of the seized shipment on Friday to determine if the boxes contained illegal drugs alongside the smuggled cigarettes.

Photos from the inspection showed PDEA agents examining the packages thoroughly, as part of ongoing efforts to curb both smuggling and the possible transport of narcotics disguised as legitimate goods.

Authorities have yet to disclose if any arrests were made or if illegal drugs were found in the shipment.

The operation underscores the continued vigilance of maritime and anti-drug enforcement agencies in intercepting smuggled goods entering Philippine territory, especially through its porous southern maritime borders.
