ZAMBOANGA CITY — A new chapter in promoting literacy and cultural appreciation in Mindanao was opened on June 3, as the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP)–Zamboanga Regional Museum formally launched the first-ever NMP Book Nook in the region.

Held at the museum’s Function Hall, the event marked a milestone not just for the museum but also for the community. The initiative is a partnership between the NMP and the National Book Development Board (NBDB), under the shared goal of cultivating a culture of reading, creativity, and lifelong learning—especially among young people.

Zamboanga takes pride in being the pioneer site for this project among NMP’s four Mindanao-based branches, which also include museums in Butuan, Davao, and Jolo.

The Zamboanga Book Nook is designed as an inclusive and inviting space for readers of all ages. It features a curated collection of Filipino-authored books—from children’s stories to novels, works on culture and the arts, reference materials, and more. Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Book Nook is envisioned to serve as a creative haven where literature and imagination converge.

One of the highlights of the launch was the ceremonial turnover of 880 book titles from the NBDB. Guests were also treated to storytelling sessions and hands-on exploration of the reading space, reflecting the project’s interactive and community-centered spirit.

Present during the launch were key figures such as Mindanao National Museum Director II Arvin Manuel Villalon, NBDB Book Nook National Coordinator Carlo Ebeo, representatives from the academe, NMP Zamboanga staff, and students.

The opening of the Book Nook signals a hopeful future for Mindanaoan readers, artists, and learners. With this space now in place, Zamboanga stands as a beacon for cultural literacy, creative engagement, and the joy of reading.
