ZAMBOANGA CITY — A woman was saved from a suspected suicide attempt on Wednesday after she reportedly tried to jump off a flyover in Barangay Sta. Cruz, following a heated argument with her live-in partner.

Initial reports indicate that the couple, who have been living together for over a year and share a child, were traveling along Salam Drive in their private vehicle when a quarrel erupted between them. Amid the ongoing heavy rain, the woman reportedly got out of the car in distress and walked toward the Sta. Cruz flyover.

Her partner, sensing that something was wrong, followed her and caught up with her at the top of the overpass. Despite his efforts to calm her, the woman reportedly climbed over the railing in an apparent attempt to take her own life. Fortunately, the man was able to hold onto her in time and prevent her from falling. No injuries were reported.

According to authorities, the man shared that his partner had previously displayed signs of suicidal ideation, often threatening to end her life during moments of serious conflict.

The incident underscores the importance of mental health awareness and early intervention. Authorities have reiterated the need for individuals experiencing emotional distress or signs of mental health challenges to seek help. Mental health professionals, support hotlines, and even open conversations with trusted friends or family can provide crucial support during vulnerable times.

Mental health advocates emphasize that such incidents are preventable with timely support and understanding. They also call on communities to become more proactive in recognizing the signs of emotional struggle, especially among loved ones.
