Zamboanga City is set to mark a significant milestone in its history as it commemorates the 80th anniversary of its liberation from Japanese forces during World War II. The observance will center around Barangay Sinunuc on Monday, March 10, 2025, highlighting the historic landing of the Allied Forces at Yellow Beach in 1945.

Remembering the Historic Landing
Historical records indicate that the Allied Forces landed at Yellow Beach on March 10 and 11, 1945, a pivotal event that led to the city’s freedom from Japanese imperial occupation. This strategic military operation was part of the broader efforts to liberate the Philippines and restore peace and sovereignty in the region.
The commemoration serves to honor the courage and sacrifices of the war veterans who played a crucial role in securing Zamboanga City’s liberation. Their valor and dedication contributed to the eventual victory of the Allied Forces in the Pacific Theater of World War II.
Commemorative Activities
Mayor John Dalipe, together with officials from the military sector, will lead the wreath-laying ceremony and a commemorative program. A key highlight of the event will be a dramatic re-enactment of the historic landing, bringing to life the bravery and resilience displayed by the Allied soldiers and Filipino resistance fighters during the war.
The event is being organized by the city government, through the City Tourism Office, in collaboration with the military sector and the Philippine Veterans Association. The commemoration is in accordance with a Sangguniang Panlungsod ordinance that officially designates March 10 and 11 as the official dates for honoring the city’s World War II veterans.
A Legacy of Courage and Freedom
The annual observance of Zamboanga City’s liberation underscores the importance of remembering the past and paying tribute to those who fought for freedom. It serves as a reminder of the resilience of the people of Zamboanga and their unwavering commitment to peace and democracy.
As the city marks this historic occasion, the commemoration also aims to educate younger generations about the sacrifices made by those who came before them. Through such events, the legacy of heroism and patriotism continues to inspire and guide future leaders in upholding the values of freedom and unity.
The 80th anniversary of Zamboanga’s liberation is not just a reflection on history but also a reaffirmation of the city’s enduring spirit and its dedication to preserving the memory of those who paved the way for its peace and prosperity today.
