CAMP SIONGCO, Awang, DOS, Maguindanao del Norte – Authorities arrested three armed men in Brgy. Tonganon, Carmen, Cotabato, at around 6:30 AM on March 2, 2025, after they were found in possession of firearms.
According to Lt. Col. Erwin Jay E. Dumaghan, commander of the 40th Infantry (Magiting) Battalion, a firefight erupted between two armed groups in the area. In response, troops from the 40IB and local police forces swiftly intervened to prevent further violence and ensure the community’s safety.
During the joint military and police law enforcement support operation, three individuals were apprehended, and authorities confiscated an M14 rifle, two M16 rifles, two bandoliers containing magazines and ammunition, and a short handheld radio. The arrested suspects were immediately taken to the police station for investigation and the filing of appropriate charges.
This incident follows another confrontation on February 25 in Matalam, Cotabato, where the 40IB mediated a dispute in a local barangay. The intervention led to the surrender of firearms, including two .30 caliber M1 Garand rifles and a .45 caliber pistol, along with magazines and ammunition. The surrender took place in Brgy. Ilian, Matalam, Cotabato.
In response to these recent clashes, Brigadier General Donald M. Gumiran, Commander of the 6th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force-Central, issued a strong statement: “Our troops will not hesitate to suppress those who seek to disrupt peace and order in our jurisdiction. There is no place for violence in our communities. We will continue to conduct operations to safeguard our people and strengthen peace in this part of Mindanao.”
Authorities continue to urge the public to cooperate in maintaining peace in the region and report any suspicious activities linked to armed groups.
