SULU, Philippines – Islamic Studies and Arabic Language (ISAL) teachers in various schools across the province of Sulu have yet to receive their salaries from the Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MBHTE BARMM), despite completing their work for January and February 2024.
According to Tuan Yahya Titong, Madaris Division Head of MBHTE Sulu Division, the delay was caused by the renewal of ISAL teachers’ contracts in January this year. He explained that such delays often occur whenever contract renewals take place.
The affected teachers, who have gone without pay for two months, have expressed concern over the financial strain caused by the delay. Titong acknowledged that some ISAL teachers have been unable to report to their assigned schools due to the situation. However, he urged them not to use the salary delay as a reason for being absent if they still have the means to fulfill their duties.
Despite the salary delay, Titong expressed gratitude to MBHTE BARMM for proceeding with the renewal of contracts for 738 ISAL teachers. This came after a Supreme Court decision ruled that Sulu is no longer part of the BARMM region, raising concerns about the future employment of ISAL teachers under the ministry.
The delay in salary disbursement highlights ongoing administrative challenges, particularly in managing contract renewals within the education sector. Affected teachers hope for a swift resolution to the issue to ensure the continuous and effective delivery of Islamic and Arabic language education in the province.
