Sumisip, Basilan – March 15, 2025 – In a concerted effort to support the reintegration of former violent extremists (FVEs) into society, the 101st Infantry “Three Red Arrows” Brigade and the 32nd Infantry Battalion (32IB), in partnership with the Rotary Club of Basilan and the local governments of Sumisip and Maluso, facilitated the distribution of farming tools and seedlings at the 32IB headquarters in Barangay Tumahubong, Sumisip, Basilan.
The initiative seeks to equip FVEs with sustainable livelihood opportunities, promote self-sufficiency through agriculture, and strengthen their transition into mainstream society.
Strengthening Peace Through Livelihood Support
The distribution ceremony saw the participation of key local leaders, including Sumisip Mayor Jul Adnan Hataman, Maluso Mayor Hanie Bud, Rotary Club of Basilan President Shiela D.S. Pagarigan, and Oliver N. Ong, Past District Governor of Rotary District 3850.
Brigadier General Alvin V. Luzon, Commander of the 101st Infantry Brigade, highlighted the critical role of livelihood programs in sustaining peace and fostering long-term stability in Basilan.
“Peace is not just about laying down arms; it must be followed by opportunities for renewal. Through programs like this, we help former combatants rebuild their lives and contribute to a more progressive and peaceful Basilan,” Brig. Gen. Luzon stated.
He also praised the leadership of 32IB Commander LTC Edmond Lanzar in implementing the initiative and expressed gratitude to the Rotary Club of Basilan and local officials for their continuous support in peace and development efforts.
A New Beginning for Former Combatants
A total of 80 FVEs benefited from the distribution of farming tools and seedlings, viewing them as essential resources for rebuilding their lives. The beneficiaries expressed their appreciation, acknowledging the initiative as a crucial step toward self-sufficiency and economic stability.
The 101st Infantry Brigade, along with its operationally controlled units and peace partners, remains committed to fostering lasting peace in Basilan by empowering former combatants with meaningful livelihood opportunities, ensuring they become productive members of society.
