Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) spearheaded a meaningful celebration of Women’s Month and World Seagrass Day on March 1, 2025, at the Selinog Island Protected Landscape and Seascape. The event brought together 64 volunteers from various sectors to promote marine conservation and community welfare.

Among the participants were divers, local residents, and personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Tactical Operations Group 9 (TOG 9) of the Philippine Air Force, National Commission of Senior Citizens – Region 9, and the Philippine Army Finance Center Producers Integrated Cooperative (PAFCPIC). Their collective efforts underscored the importance of preserving marine ecosystems and empowering coastal communities.
The event featured a Coastal Cleanup and SCUBAsurero activity, during which participants collected 11 sacks of waste from the shoreline, including plastic bottles, cellophanes, and discarded clothes. Additionally, divers retrieved a sack of underwater debris consisting of fishing nets and wires, contributing to the restoration of marine biodiversity and the protection of vital seagrass beds.
To further support coastal families, the Ukay-ukay sa Baybay donation drive was conducted, distributing pre-loved clothes, bags, and footwear. This initiative not only provided much-needed items to local residents but also promoted sustainability by encouraging the reuse of clothing and accessories.
Adding a vibrant and health-focused aspect to the celebration, Zumba sa Baybay energized participants, reinforcing the connection between a healthy environment and personal well-being. The activity highlighted the role of physical fitness in fostering an active and engaged community.
DENR expressed its deep appreciation to all volunteers, partner agencies, local government units, and organizations that contributed to the success of the event. Their dedication showcased the vital role of women in conservation efforts and emphasized the power of community-driven environmental protection.
