Davao Occidental, Philippines – On February 4, 2025, the Philippine Navy’s BRP Artemio Ricarte (PS37), a Jacinto-Class Corvette operating under Naval Task Force 71, successfully intercepted a smuggling operation off the coast of Balut Island, Davao Occidental.

While conducting maritime patrols in the area, PS37 spotted watercraft M/B Shamina carrying suspicious cargo concealed under a canvas. The vessel attempted to evade pursuit but was intercepted approximately 5.5 nautical miles southwest of Balut Island. Upon inspection, PS37’s boarding crew discovered 1,013 master cases of smuggled D&J brand cigarettes, with an estimated market value of ₱43,729,770.00.
Following the seizure, PS37 towed M/B Shamina to the Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao headquarters at CFP, Panacan, Davao City. Upon arrival on February 5, the vessel’s seven crew members underwent medical assessment at Camp Panacan Hospital. Meanwhile, personnel from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Regional Office XI, assisted by sniffing dogs, conducted a thorough inspection of the cargo for possible illegal drugs.
Once all necessary documentation was completed, the watercraft, its crew, and the confiscated cigarettes were turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition.
The successful interdiction underscores the Philippine Navy’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s maritime domain against illicit activities, particularly smuggling, which continues to threaten the nation’s economy and security.
