DIPOLOG CITY – In a continued effort to protect marine biodiversity, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Manukan, in collaboration with the Dipolog City Government, released 95 Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) sea turtles along the shores of Dipolog City Boulevard on February 4.

The activity was led by OIC CENR Officer Eugene S. Celi, along with Forester Adrian Galan, Boulevard In-Charge Reggie Lavoctoria, and OIC City ENR Officer Atty. Gratian Paul R. Tidor. Their participation underscored the strong partnership between national and local agencies in marine conservation, particularly in the protection of sea turtles and their nesting sites.
The Olive Ridley sea turtle is classified as Endangered under DAO-2019-09 and is protected by Republic Act 9147, which prohibits the collection, hunting, or harm of the species without proper authorization. The species faces threats such as habitat destruction, poaching, and climate change, highlighting the urgency of conservation efforts.
Through this joint initiative, CENRO Manukan and the Dipolog City Government continue to implement marine habitat protection programs, nesting site conservation, and awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of protecting marine turtles. The DENR also calls on local communities to report any illegal activities involving wildlife and actively participate in conservation efforts to safeguard marine biodiversity for future generations.
