Authorities are urging the public to reconsider the use of fireworks following a tragic increase in related incidents over the New Year celebrations. A sharp rise in injuries and fatalities has highlighted the severe dangers posed by fireworks, both legal and illegal.

Fatalities and Alarming Incidents
The first confirmed stray bullet case of the season claimed the life of a 19-year-old man in Davao del Norte. The victim, who was enjoying the festivities outside his home, was fatally struck by a bullet. This brings the total death toll from fireworks-related incidents to three.
In a shocking development, two young children—a three-year-old and a two-year-old—accidentally swallowed firecrackers. Both incidents underline the urgent need for vigilance and preventive measures during such celebrations.
Surge in Injuries
The Department of Health (DOH) recorded 39 new fireworks-related injuries on New Year’s Eve alone, with an additional nine cases reported on January 2, 2025, and 19 more in subsequent days. As of now, the total number of cases has reached 771—a 27.6% increase compared to the previous year.
Among the most common causes of injuries are popular firecrackers like kwitis, 5-star, and bogus. These have led to various injuries ranging from skin burns to severe cases requiring amputation. Alarmingly, teenagers and minors remain the most affected demographic.
Government and DOH Response
The DOH has reiterated its call for public discipline and adherence to safety protocols to prevent further tragedies. Key reminders from the agency include:
- Seek medical attention immediately for any wound, no matter how minor, to prevent infections like tetanus.
- Supervise children closely and dispose of leftover fireworks safely.
- Be prepared with a first-aid kit in case of injuries.
The Need for Change
The ongoing incidents have reignited discussions around the regulation and potential prohibition of fireworks to safeguard public health and safety. Advocates for stricter laws argue that the annual toll of injuries and fatalities is avoidable through heightened awareness, responsible behavior, and alternative ways to celebrate.
Discipline and caution are key to ensuring that festive traditions do not result in preventable tragedies. The DOH and other agencies continue to emphasize that safety must take precedence over spectacle as the nation reflects on this year’s sobering statistics.
