Massive flooding caused by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) has left thousands of families in the Davao Region displaced and caused significant damage to infrastructure, according to the Office of the Civil Defense-Davao Region (OCD-Davao).

As of 10:00 PM on January 1, 2025, OCD-Davao reported that an estimated 16,272 families in Davao Occidental, 8,464 families in Davao de Oro, and 44 families in Davao Oriental have been affected by the floods.

The municipalities of Don Marcelino and Malita in Davao Occidental declared a state of calamity on December 28, 2024. These declarations were formalized through Sangguniang Bayan (SB) Resolutions No. 207 and No. 142, respectively. These resolutions enable faster access to disaster response funds and impose a price freeze on basic commodities in the affected areas.

In Davao Occidental, four roads and three bridges remain impassable due to flood damage. Additionally, 690 homes were partially damaged, while 383 homes were completely destroyed. The estimated total damage to infrastructure in Davao Occidental and Davao del Norte has reached ₱215.7 million.

Local government units (LGUs) have been providing relief and assistance to affected families. In Davao Occidental, 12,592 families have received aid, while in Davao de Oro, 8,464 families have been assisted. Relief efforts include the distribution of potable and non-potable water to evacuees in Malita and other affected areas. The LGU of Malita reported delivering water supplies to approximately 46 households, or 197 individuals, sheltering at Catumbal Gym in Barangay Mana. They assured residents that water distribution efforts will continue across the province.

The situation remains critical in Don Marcelino and Malita, two of the hardest-hit municipalities in Davao Occidental. Provincial authorities are focused on addressing the urgent needs of displaced families while coordinating rehabilitation efforts for damaged infrastructure and housing.

This latest report highlights the devastating impact of the ITCZ on the Davao Region, underscoring the need for continued support and recovery efforts to help affected communities rebuild.
