Zamboanga City – Police Senior Master Sergeant (PSMS) Ryan Mariano of the Zamboanga City Police Station 9 (ZCPS9) Special Drug Enforcement Team (SDET) was lauded for his exceptional bravery during a covert operation on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2024. The heroic act, which occurred at around 6:00 PM in front of Mount Carmel Parish Church, Zone 1, Barangay Ayala, earned him the prestigious Medalya ng Kadakilaan (PNP Heroism Medal) and the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting (PNP Wounded Medal).

The incident unfolded when PSMS Mariano engaged in a shootout with two armed suspects on a motorcycle, colloquially referred to as “riding in tandem.” Despite sustaining serious gunshot wounds, he valiantly stood his ground, fatally wounding both suspects. One suspect died on the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries at Brent Hospital after being transported by emergency responders.
PSMS Mariano’s courageous actions not only neutralized a significant threat but also safeguarded the community from potential harm. Following the operation, Mariano was rushed to Labuan General Hospital, where he received immediate medical treatment for his injuries.
In recognition of his selflessness and heroism, the medals were presented to PSMS Mariano by Police Brigadier General (PBGEN) Bowenn Joey M. Masauding, Regional Director of Police Regional Office 9 (PRO9), and Police Lieutenant Colonel (PLTCOL) Areston D. Limos, Officer-in-Charge of the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO).
“The courage and determination displayed by PSMS Mariano in the face of grave danger reflect the highest ideals of the Philippine National Police. His actions bring great honor to the Police Regional Office 9 and the entire PNP organization,” PBGEN Masauding said during the awarding ceremony.
The bravery demonstrated by PSMS Mariano underscores the commitment and sacrifices made by law enforcement officers in ensuring the safety and security of their communities. His story serves as an inspiration and a reminder of the risks faced by those in uniform every day.
