Davao Oriental, Philippines – A significant milestone was achieved in the province on January 23, 2025, with the launch of key health sector projects aimed at improving services for families and patients, particularly those battling cancer. These initiatives are a testament to the local government’s commitment to advancing healthcare services for its residents.
Hope for Children with Cancer
The highlight of the event was the inauguration of the Pediatric Cancer Care Network Office under the House of Hope Foundation for Kids with Cancer, Inc. Located within the Davao Oriental Provincial Medical Center (DOPMC), this new facility will serve as a transient home and support center for children with cancer and their families.
In collaboration with the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), the facility offers holistic care, including treatment, psychosocial support, education, financial assistance, and rehabilitation services. Managed by volunteers and supported by various donor organizations, the House of Hope aims to ease the burden on families by providing temporary housing and access to comprehensive care.
Dr. Mae Dolendo, a renowned pediatric oncologist and founding president of the House of Hope, led the facility’s opening ceremony. She emphasized the foundation’s mission with the statement, “No child should die in the dawn of life,” expressing hope for timely assistance to children with cancer.
To formalize collaboration, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between the Provincial Government, SPMC, and the House of Hope. This initiative ensures that cancer patients from Davao Oriental receive necessary support during referrals to larger hospitals in Davao City or Tagum for specialized treatment.
Groundbreaking for New Medical Facilities
In addition to the House of Hope, the province launched several other projects to enhance DOPMC’s capacity and ensure quality healthcare for residents:
- Expansion of the Provincial Health Office (PHO) Building and Ward Re-roofing
Funded by the Department of Health’s (DOH) Health Facilities Enhancement Program 2024, this project aims to modernize hospital infrastructure. - Power System Upgrades
With support from the Local Government Development Fund, the synchronization of generators and the activation of an Automatic Transfer Switch will ensure uninterrupted power supply during emergencies. - Improved Water System
A new potable water system, funded by the Local Government Development Fund 2023, includes a geo-resistivity survey to provide reliable and sustainable water supply for the hospital.
These developments strengthen DOPMC’s capacity to deliver high-quality medical services to the province’s population.
Commitment to Compassionate Healthcare
Governor Niño Uy, known for prioritizing healthcare initiatives, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders and partners during the groundbreaking ceremony.
“These projects reflect our unwavering dedication to providing quality healthcare services. They inspire us to continue striving for the well-being of our people, especially those in need,” Governor Uy stated.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Reden Bersaldo announced that additional projects, amounting to ₱55 million, are underway for DOPMC, further bolstered by DOH support.
A Brighter Future for Davao Oriental’s Health Sector
Under Governor Uy’s leadership, Davao Oriental is setting a benchmark in healthcare advancements, ensuring that residents, particularly vulnerable groups, have access to comprehensive medical services. The launch of the House of Hope facility and other infrastructure projects highlights the government’s sincere efforts to address the healthcare needs of its people.
With continued support and collaboration, these initiatives bring hope and tangible improvements to the lives of many, making healthcare more accessible and effective for all Davao Oriental residents.
