New Corella, Davao del Norte – Authorities arrested three Chinese nationals and one Filipino backhoe operator on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, for their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities in Purok 2, Barangay Mambing.
According to a statement from the Police Regional Office (PRO) Davao, the suspects failed to present the necessary permits and legal documents required for their mining operations. This prompted law enforcement officers to intervene and halt the unauthorized activities.
During the operation, police confiscated three backhoes, four water pumps, and two sets of fabricated screeners, which were allegedly used in the illegal mining activities.
“The arrested individuals are now in the custody of the New Corella Municipal Police Station for proper disposition, while the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region XI and the Philippine National Police (PNP) are preparing to file the appropriate charges against them,” authorities stated.
The police and concerned agencies have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on illegal mining operations in the region. This latest operation highlights the government’s efforts to protect the environment and enforce mining regulations.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region XI has reminded individuals and entities involved in mining to comply with all legal requirements to avoid penalties and legal action. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the illegal activities and whether additional individuals or groups are involved.
Residents and environmental advocates have lauded the swift action of authorities in addressing the issue. However, they also call for stricter enforcement measures and continuous monitoring to prevent similar incidents in the future.
