Basilan Province, including Lamitan City under the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), marked the New Year with an impressive achievement—a complete absence of firecracker-related incidents. This milestone was confirmed by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Sharifa Abbas Alvarez, who reported that except for Isabela City, which falls under Region 9, the entire province experienced a safe and injury-free celebration.
Dr. Alvarez’s confirmation underscores the province’s dedication to ensuring public safety during the festive season. “We are pleased to report that Basilan, excluding Isabela City, has achieved a record of zero incidents related to firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices,” she stated, attributing the success to strict regulations and heightened public awareness.
Governor Jim Salliman-Hataman lauded the collective efforts of the security forces and the community in maintaining peace and order throughout the holiday season. He specifically commended the 101st Brigade, led by Brigadier General Alvin Luzon, and the Philippine National Police (PNP) under Provincial Director Colonel Cerrazid Umabong, for their steadfast commitment to public safety.
“Our security forces deserve recognition for their vigilance and dedication. Their efforts ensured that the people of Basilan celebrated the Christmas and New Year festivities without any untoward incidents,” Governor Salliman-Hataman said.
The province’s achievement highlights its proactive measures, which included strict enforcement of firecracker bans, public information campaigns, and coordinated security efforts. Residents expressed their appreciation for the peaceful celebrations, noting that the absence of firecracker-related injuries contributed to a more enjoyable and worry-free holiday.
In contrast, Isabela City, which is not part of BARMM, remains under Region 9’s jurisdiction and reported separate circumstances. Efforts to align safety practices across jurisdictions are expected to be a focus in future celebrations.
Basilan’s success in ensuring a peaceful and safe New Year serves as a model for other provinces. It demonstrates the effectiveness of community cooperation, strong governance, and well-coordinated security measures. As the province continues to prioritize safety and harmony, its residents look forward to more celebrations that emphasize health, security, and unity.
