Talaingod, Davao del Norte – In a momentous event underscoring the pursuit of peace and reconciliation, twenty former members of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) formally surrendered with firearms during a ceremony at Balimba Hills, Sitio JBL, Barangay Sto. Niño, Talaingod. The ceremony, held under the theme “From Rebellion to Reconciliation: A Journey Towards Peace,” marked a significant step toward lasting harmony in the region.
Organized by the 56th Infantry (TATAG) Battalion, 7th Infantry Division, and the 1003rd (RAPTOR) Brigade, 10th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army, the event showcased the collaborative efforts of the military, local government units, and peace-building organizations. It highlighted the collective commitment to addressing the root causes of conflict and providing a pathway for former rebels to reintegrate into mainstream society.
Local officials, military leaders, and peace advocates commended the event as a milestone in the ongoing efforts to foster peace and stability. They emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for the former combatants to rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to their communities. “This act of surrender is a testament to the power of unity and dialogue in resolving conflicts and moving toward a peaceful future,” said one of the attending peace advocates.
To support the transition of the former CTG members, the government provided immediate assistance, including essential supplies and livelihood support. The Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) facilitated profiling activities to ensure the delivery of tailored services. These services include counseling, family assistance, and sustainable livelihood opportunities aimed at helping the individuals become productive members of society.
LTC Ali B. Sumangil, INF (GSC) PA, Commanding Officer of the 56th Infantry Battalion, reiterated the military’s unwavering support for the reintegration of the former rebels. “The Philippine Army remains steadfast in its mission to support peace and development initiatives. We will continue working hand in hand with various stakeholders to help these individuals start anew and contribute positively to our nation’s progress,” LTC Sumangil stated.
The surrender of the twenty individuals, along with their firearms, symbolizes a turning point in the local peace process. It serves as a reminder that reconciliation and rehabilitation are possible through shared responsibility and sustained dialogue.
