Northern Mindanao, Philippines – Ten local government units (LGUs) in Northern Mindanao were recognized on December 11 as recipients of the prestigious 2024 Anti-Drug Abuse Council (ADAC) National Performance Award. These LGUs have been lauded for their exceptional efforts in combating illegal drugs and fostering drug-free communities.

The awarding ceremony highlighted the municipalities of Kolambugan, Matungao, Nunungan, and Sapad in Lanao del Norte; Concepcion in Misamis Occidental; and Binuangan, Libertad, Lugait, Naawan, and Sugbongcogon in Misamis Oriental. These LGUs stood out for their outstanding initiatives, innovative programs, and unwavering commitment to eliminating illegal drug activities in their areas.

Secretary of the Interior and Local Government Juan Victor “Jonvic” Remulla, Jr. emphasized the importance of collaboration and integrity in the fight against illegal drugs. In his message, he said, “If good people get together, if good, honest, well-meaning leaders get together, and honestly pursue a drug-free community, [a] drug-free Philippines, then maybe we can be a better country.”

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) commended the awardees for their exemplary performance and encouraged other LGUs to replicate their best practices. According to the DILG, the ADAC Performance Awards serve as both recognition and motivation for local governments to strengthen their efforts in the campaign against illegal drugs.

The award underscores the significant role of LGUs in fostering safe and healthy communities. By implementing robust anti-drug abuse programs and encouraging active participation from residents, these municipalities have set a standard of excellence in local governance.

The DILG’s ADAC initiative is part of a broader national effort to address the persistent challenges of illegal drugs. It highlights the necessity of collective action from LGUs, local leaders, and communities in ensuring the safety and well-being of all Filipinos. As these LGUs celebrate their achievements, they remain committed to sustaining and enhancing their anti-drug campaigns to create a drug-free Philippines.
