Zamboanga del Norte Joins the Nation in 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women

The Provincial Government of Zamboanga del Norte has officially joined the national observance of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW), an advocacy initiative mandated by Proclamation No. 1172, series of 2006. The campaign runs annually from November 25 to December 12, reflecting the Philippine Government’s commitment to upholding the human rights of women and addressing all forms of gender-based violence.

A National Call to Action

The campaign, part of the Philippines’ broader participation in the international 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, underscores the nation’s dedication to creating a society free from violence against women and girls. This year’s observance is particularly significant as it highlights the 20th year of the Philippines’ participation in this global movement.

The campaign not only serves as a reminder of the constitutional mandate to protect women’s rights but also aims to assess and enhance public awareness of the forms and manifestations of violence against women. By doing so, it aspires to inspire action and ensure continued progress toward a VAW-free community.

Provincial Support and Local Advocacy

In Zamboanga del Norte, local government units (LGUs), civil society organizations, and stakeholders have committed to amplifying the campaign’s reach. Through a series of activities, including educational forums, community dialogues, and multimedia campaigns, the provincial government aims to:

  • Raise Awareness: Inform citizens about the different forms of violence against women, including physical, psychological, and economic abuse.
  • Celebrate Milestones: Reflect on the progress made in combating VAW over the years, both locally and nationally.
  • Promote Engagement: Encourage community members, especially men and boys, to participate actively in ending gender-based violence.

Governor Rosalina Jalosjos, in a statement, reiterated the province’s dedication to supporting initiatives that protect and empower women. “Ending violence against women is not just a women’s issue; it’s a societal challenge that demands collective action,” the governor emphasized.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

As the campaign progresses, key activities will include public information drives, capacity-building sessions for advocates, and interactive platforms to share success stories and lessons learned. These efforts aim to build a stronger understanding of VAW and ensure a more comprehensive approach to tackling the issue at the grassroots level.

The 18-Day Campaign is a timely reminder of the importance of vigilance and action in safeguarding the rights of women and girls. By reflecting on past achievements and identifying areas for improvement, Zamboanga del Norte, along with the rest of the nation, is poised to take meaningful steps toward a future free from violence and discrimination.

Join the Advocacy

The public is encouraged to participate in the campaign by attending local events, wearing orange (the official color of the anti-VAW advocacy), and sharing campaign messages through social media. Together, communities can strengthen their resolve to eliminate violence against women and create an inclusive, equitable society for all.
