In a united stand against child labor, over 200 child laborers and their families gathered in Sultan Kudarat to mark National Children’s Month and raise awareness of the importance of a safe, child-friendly environment. The event, themed “Break the Prevalence, End the Violence: Protecting Children, Creating a Safe Philippines,” highlighted both the dangers of child labor and the collective commitment of communities and stakeholders in the region to address this issue.

The gathering was organized with the collaboration of the Regional Council Against Child Labor XII, the SOCCSKSARGEN Federation of Family Welfare Committees, Inc., and the Provincial Government of Sultan Kudarat, among other organizations committed to ending child labor. Youth participants from across Sultan Kudarat joined the event, emphasizing the widespread support for creating safe spaces and opportunities for children in the province.
Speaking at the event, Fatima Quorayce L. Bataga, OIC-Assistant Regional Director of DOLE XII, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling child labor in SOCCSKSARGEN, encouraging families to support efforts that allow children to learn, play, and grow free from exploitation.
To support families and children in need, the event offered essential services, including health assistance, legal counseling, and the issuance of national ID registration and NBI clearances. Additionally, participants received free haircuts and massages from TESDA and could engage in informative sessions on adolescent health, reproductive rights, and gender-based violence. Fun activities, including games, a Save the Children advocacy booth, and a community wishing wall, helped reinforce the positive message of a safe and nurturing childhood.
Meanwhile, as part of the ongoing efforts to combat child labor, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) XII, through its Cotabato Field Office, provided livelihood starter kits to 25 parents of child laborers in Barangay La Fortuna, M’lang, Cotabato. This support aims to empower parents to earn a stable income, reducing the economic pressures that often push children into labor. With these resources, families are better equipped to start small businesses, gain financial stability, and ensure their children remain in school.
Present at the livelihood distribution event were LEO II Rica Mea Pepugal, Livelihood Development Specialist George Stephen Lasaga, M’lang PESO manager Mary Ann Cortado, and M’lang Vice Mayor Joselito Piñol, underscoring the local government’s commitment to helping vulnerable families.
The DOLE’s DILP or Kabuhayan Program, a flagship initiative aimed at supporting disadvantaged workers, is a key component of these efforts. Through capacity-building and assistance, the program helps marginalized families build sustainable livelihoods and secure their children’s futures.
With a blend of advocacy, essential services, and joyful activities, these events in SOCCSKSARGEN highlight the region’s dedication to protecting children from labor and fostering safer, family-friendly communities. Local leaders, community groups, and advocates continue to pave the way for a safer, child-friendly Philippines, where children can thrive without the shadow of exploitation.
