Butuan City, Philippines – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office Caraga swiftly responded to a fire that razed homes in Ampayon, Butuan City, at 3 AM on October 19, 2024. The incident affected 129 families, including 112 students from Caraga State University (CSU) and 17 other residents.

In the wake of the tragedy, the DSWD augmented food and non-food items (F/NFI) to the displaced families. A total of 645 family food packs (FFPs) were distributed, with each family receiving five packs. Alongside the food assistance, the Department provided hygiene kits, kitchen kits, sleeping kits, and family kits to help families cope with the immediate aftermath.
To address temporary shelter needs, 20 modular tents were also delivered to ensure safe and secure accommodations for the victims.
The DSWD Field Office Caraga worked closely with the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) to deliver a coordinated and comprehensive response. This collaboration aimed to ensure that the students and residents received adequate support as they began rebuilding their lives.
Authorities continue to assess the situation, with further assistance to be provided as needed. The efforts underscore the importance of community and government collaboration in addressing emergencies and supporting recovery efforts.
The fire serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance in preventing similar incidents and the critical role of timely aid in alleviating the hardships of those affected.
