SIBAGAT, Agusan del Sur — A 62-year-old man who had only recently been released from prison after serving time in connection with a homicide case is back in police custody after he was allegedly involved in the brutal killing of his own uncle in Sibagat, Agusan del Sur.
The suspect, identified by the Sibagat Municipal Police Station as Lauro Aumentado Boyles, 62, with a live-in partner and an Indigenous resident of Macabalan, Cagayan de Oro City, was arrested during a police hot pursuit operation following the killing at Sitio San Vicente, Barangay Afga, Sibagat.
Police said the operation was carried out at around 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Purok 10 of the same barangay under the supervision of Police Lieutenant Ramonit P. Rivera II, officer-in-charge of the Sibagat Municipal Police Station.
According to the police account, the victim—identified as Boyles’ own uncle—suffered severe injuries in the attack. Authorities alleged that the victim was not only killed but also had his neck slashed and his kneecap removed.
The circumstances and motive behind the killing remain subject to further investigation.
Arrest Leads to Firearm and Suspected Shabu Recovery
Following Boyles’ arrest, police conducted a search of the bag he was carrying. Authorities reported recovering a caliber .38 revolver and two packets of suspected shabu.
The recovery of the firearm and suspected illegal drugs could expose Boyles to additional criminal charges aside from the case arising from the death of his uncle.
During questioning, police said Boyles admitted to killing his uncle. However, he reportedly denied ownership of the firearm and suspected illegal drugs recovered from his bag.
The conflicting claims will have to be addressed through the investigation and appropriate legal proceedings.
Faces Multiple Criminal Charges
Boyles remains detained at the Sibagat Municipal Police Station as authorities prepare the filing of criminal charges against him.
Police said the charges may include violations of Republic Act No. 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, for alleged illegal possession of a firearm, and Republic Act No. 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, in connection with the suspected shabu recovered during the operation.
He is also expected to face the appropriate criminal complaint in connection with the death of his uncle.
Authorities have not disclosed additional details regarding the victim’s identity, the exact circumstances leading to the confrontation, or what prompted the alleged attack.
The police investigation is continuing, while the evidence recovered during the operation will undergo the necessary examination and documentation as authorities build the cases against the suspect.
Despite his reported admission during police questioning, Boyles remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
