Davao City, Philippines — Police Staff Sergeant (PSSg) Noel Marundan lost his life during a police operation in Sitio Alon, Barangay Malabog, Paquibato District on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. Marundan and his team were executing an arrest warrant for Nestor Dabawnon Ansayod, alias “Osie,” when the suspect opened fire, fatally wounding Marundan. In the ensuing exchange, the suspect was also killed as the other officers returned fire.
The confrontation began around 5:00 p.m., when police located Ansayod in the area. Rather than surrendering, Ansayod allegedly resisted arrest, firing at the officers and striking PSSg Marundan. The remote location and severe injuries sustained prevented Marundan from reaching medical care in time, and he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Paquibato District Hospital.
Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) arrived late in the evening to process the scene, with a post-mortem examination scheduled at St. Peter Funeral Homes, Panacan, Davao City. Due to the challenging location and security considerations, the SOCO team will continue their forensic examination of the site today.
Davao City Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte expressed his condolences to Marundan’s family, honoring his courage and dedication to service. “PSSg Marundan will always be remembered for his courageous service, and we will honor his legacy as we continue to fight for a peaceful society,” he said. Mayor Duterte also commended the Davao City Police for their unwavering commitment to public safety.
Acting Davao City Police Office (DCPO) Director, Police Colonel Hansel M. Marantan, assured that arrangements are being made for PSSg Marundan’s family, while Police Colonel Anna Liza T. Macapinlac of the Regional Comptrollership Division has pledged financial support for the bereaved family.
The passing of PSSg Marundan highlights the risks faced daily by law enforcement officers as they work to ensure public safety. His dedication and sacrifice stand as a solemn reminder of the courage of the men and women who protect the Dabawenyo community.
