MAITUM, Sarangani Province – In a significant step towards bolstering wildlife protection, several ‘bantay gubat’ volunteers participated in a training workshop aimed at safeguarding the rich biodiversity of the region, including the critically endangered Philippine Eagle. The event took place on October 22-23, organized by the Provincial Government of Sarangani in collaboration with the Environment Conservation and Protection Center (ECPC) and the local government unit of Maitum.
Representatives from various barangays, including Batian, Upo Ticulab, New La Union, and Wali, joined officials from the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) for the comprehensive training program. The workshop featured a resource person from the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Kiamba, who educated participants on Republic Act No. 9147, also known as the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. This legislation is crucial for maintaining ecological balance and protecting wildlife species and their habitats.
Key topics included safe wildlife handling practices and effective responses to wildlife issues in their respective areas. The discussions highlighted the essential role of ‘bantay gubat’ volunteers in safeguarding Maitum’s natural heritage and ensuring the sustainability of Sarangani Province’s ecosystems.
As part of the training, volunteers were prepared for their upcoming deputation as Wildlife Enforcement Officers next year, enhancing their ability to address conservation challenges effectively. This initiative aims to empower the community and significantly improve the capacity of these volunteers to protect the region’s wildlife and ecosystems.
With ongoing commitment and support, the future looks promising for the diverse wildlife of Sarangani Province, as local volunteers step up to safeguard their natural heritage.
