The Northern Davao Electric Cooperative (NORDECO), Inc. has strongly refuted claims that it has offered to sell its operations to Aboitiz Power Corporation. In a statement released on October 13, 2024, NORDECO’s Acting General Manager, Elvera S. Alngog, condemned remarks made by Anton Mari G. Perdices of Aboitiz Power, who claimed that the cooperative had proposed a sale with a valuation ranging between P700 million and P1 billion.
“We categorically deny Mr. Perdices’ allegations,” Alngog stated. “These are defamatory and clearly meant to besmirch NORDECO’s reputation. We have remained silent for some time, but these malicious tactics can no longer be tolerated.”
Alngog criticized Aboitiz Power for allegedly using “underhanded tactics” to advance its business interests. NORDECO, she emphasized, has successfully defended itself in the past against similar claims and will continue to stand firm in its mission to serve the region.
The controversy comes amidst long-standing public dissatisfaction with NORDECO’s service, particularly in Northern Davao and nearby areas. The cooperative has faced mounting criticism from local consumers who have experienced frequent power outages, voltage fluctuations, and delayed infrastructure improvements. Many residents and businesses have voiced concerns over the reliability of NORDECO’s service, with some calling for reforms or the entry of other energy providers.
Aboitiz Power, one of the country’s largest power distributors, has previously expressed interest in expanding its reach in the region, potentially increasing the stakes in this current dispute. However, NORDECO maintains that it is not for sale and will continue to operate independently, despite the challenges.
Alngog concluded with a strong message of resilience, saying, “We will continue to stand firm, with unwavering faith and resolve, for the glory of God.”
As the debate over power services continues, NORDECO remains at the center of discussions about energy stability and infrastructure in Northern Davao, a region still grappling with inconsistencies in electricity delivery.
