Manila, Philippines — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to accelerating infrastructure development in Northern Mindanao through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for Laguindingan International Airport. A concession agreement was signed at the Malacañan Palace on Monday, aiming to enhance airport facilities, expand services, and stimulate regional economic growth.
In his remarks at the signing ceremony, President Marcos highlighted the government’s ongoing mission to elevate the country’s airport infrastructure. “Witnessing the signing of this concession agreement is a reminder of what we are capable of doing when we remain committed to a common goal – to help improve the lives of our people,” Marcos said. The President was joined by government officials and private sector representatives for the event.
Opened in 2013, Laguindingan International Airport is strategically located between Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, serving as the primary gateway to Northern Mindanao. It currently accommodates 1.6 million passengers annually, making it Mindanao’s second busiest airport. However, with the signing of the PPP concession, the airport’s capacity is expected to significantly expand, with projections of up to 3.9 million passengers in the first phase and 6.3 million by the end of the second phase.
According to the President, these developments are designed not only to handle increased passenger traffic but also to meet higher standards for safety, efficiency, and convenience. “The improvement of the airport will significantly boost tourism, create jobs, increase business presence, and ultimately aid in achieving our goal of economic growth,” Marcos noted.
The project involves a long-term collaboration where a private entity will assume operational, maintenance, and development responsibilities for Laguindingan Airport. This arrangement allows for infrastructure upgrades and streamlined operations without imposing a significant financial burden on the government. The partnership includes investments aimed at modernizing terminals, expanding facilities, and generating revenue through enhanced airport services and commercial activities.
MinDA Secretary Leo Tereso A. Magno, who attended the signing, emphasized the importance of the concession for the region’s growth and development. The airport project aligns with the administration’s broader strategy to drive economic progress in Mindanao, boost connectivity, and increase opportunities for local communities.
President Marcos concluded his speech by reaffirming his administration’s dedication to investing in Northern Mindanao, expressing optimism that the airport’s upgrade will catalyze broader regional development and contribute to nationwide economic resilience.
