Elevating Security in Turtle Islands: A Key Move for National Safety and Development

Turtle Islands, Tawi-Tawi, October 8, 2024 – In a significant move to boost security and foster development in the strategic Turtle Islands, PCOL Rodolfo A. Inoy Jr., Provincial Director of the Tawi-Tawi Police Provincial Office, conducted a field visit and inspection of the area, accompanied by key military officials. Joining him were BGEN Nestor E. Narag Jr., Commander of the 2nd Marine Brigade, along with personnel from the Philippine Navy and Philippine Marines.

The visit focused on assessing the readiness and operational capacity of the Turtle Islands Municipal Police Station (MPS) under PMAJ Romer G. Enriquez, Chief of Police. The security delegation made stops on both Taganak and Bakkungan Islands, which are crucial points for national security, given their proximity to international borders and importance to the Philippines’ territorial integrity.

Turtle Islands, which form part of the westernmost point of the Philippine archipelago, have long been recognized for their geographic significance, particularly in maritime security. They are not only a rich ecological area but also a vital link in ensuring peace and stability in the region, given their proximity to Malaysia and key international sea routes.

The inspection coincided with the State of the Municipal Address by Hon. Mayor Mohammad Faizal Jamalul, where PCOL Inoy served as the Guest Speaker. In his address, Inoy stressed the importance of intensified inter-agency cooperation in maintaining security in Turtle Islands, a critical region for both national defense and local livelihood.

“Securing Turtle Islands is not just about maintaining peace and order; it’s about protecting the entire nation’s borders. With stronger collaboration between the Philippine National Police, the Philippine Marines, and the local government, we are setting the foundation for lasting peace and sustainable development,” Inoy said.

The Provincial Director emphasized that enhanced security measures in the islands, which face external threats such as piracy, illegal fishing, and smuggling, are integral to the economic and social development of Tawi-Tawi. He further highlighted the proactive role that the local police force plays in ensuring public safety, while commending the cooperation of local leaders and communities.

BGEN Narag echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the role of the 2nd Marine Brigade in providing continuous support to law enforcement agencies and securing the country’s western frontier. “We are committed to maintaining a strong presence in Turtle Islands to deter potential threats and ensure that these islands remain safe and peaceful for all.”

This coordinated effort between the PNP, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and local government units in Tawi-Tawi underscores the national priority placed on securing the Turtle Islands. This area not only holds environmental and economic importance but also serves as a frontline in ensuring national sovereignty and maritime security.

With these initiatives in place, the security forces and local government officials reaffirm their dedication to keeping the Turtle Islands secure, promoting peace, and fostering development, making the region a safer place for its residents and a stronghold for the nation.
