In celebration of World Bamboo Day, the Mindanao Kawayanihan Team has successfully conducted a simulation of their upcoming attempt to set a world record for the “Most People Planting Bamboo Simultaneously.” This trial event was held at four key locations across Northern Mindanao: Pagatpat in Cagayan de Oro (CDO), Maluko in Manolo Fortich, Sta. Ana in Tagoloan, and Mandangoa in Balingasag.
The simulation is a precursor to the official world record attempt, scheduled for October 18, 2024, where over 5,500 planters will simultaneously plant bamboo across at least 20 locations in Mindanao. The initiative is spearheaded by the Kawayanihan Circular Economy Movement, an advocacy dedicated to promoting bamboo as a key resource for a circular economy, climate resilience, and sustainability in the Philippines.
The Kawayanihan Circular Economy Movement aims to raise awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of bamboo. By incorporating bamboo into reforestation and circular economy strategies, the movement highlights its role in carbon sequestration, soil stabilization, and sustainable livelihoods.
Led by Congressman Jose Manuel F. Alba, the district representative of Bukidnon’s 1st Congressional District, the project has garnered support from a wide array of partners, including the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), more than 30 local government units (LGUs), national government agencies (NGAs), higher education institutions (HEIs), and private organizations.
The successful simulation on World Bamboo Day showcased the movement’s readiness for the record-setting event in October and demonstrated the broad support from communities and institutions across Northern Mindanao. This initiative not only aims to achieve a world record but also underscores the region’s commitment to environmental sustainability and economic development through bamboo cultivation.
The official attempt in October promises to be a landmark event for both Mindanao and the Philippines, positioning the region as a leader in bamboo cultivation and circular economy practices.
