The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has announced a significant change in the schedule for the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) for the upcoming Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Parliamentary elections. Following a recent Supreme Court ruling, which determined that Sulu is not part of BARMM, Comelec has rescheduled the filing period to November 4-9, 2024.
The decision comes in response to the Supreme Court’s decision that excluded Sulu from the BARMM jurisdiction, a move that has prompted a realignment of the election timeline to accommodate this legal change.
Comelec Chair George Garcia addressed the concerns surrounding this adjustment, stating, “The rescheduling of the filing period for the BARMM Parliamentary elections is necessary to ensure all candidates are properly registered and that the election process is conducted in compliance with the latest legal determinations. We appreciate the patience of all stakeholders as we make these necessary adjustments.”
Despite this change, Garcia confirmed that the timeline for the filing of COCs for local offices within the BARMM region will proceed as originally planned. Candidates for local positions will still be able to file their COCs from October 1-8, 2024.
Garcia further reassured that the BARMM Parliamentary elections will still take place as scheduled next year. “The elections for the BARMM Parliament will move forward as planned, and we are committed to ensuring a smooth and transparent electoral process,” Garcia added.
The Supreme Court’s ruling and the subsequent rescheduling underscore the dynamic nature of the electoral landscape in the BARMM region. As preparations continue, Comelec remains focused on upholding electoral integrity and adapting to changes to facilitate a fair and orderly election.
