Bangsamoro Government Responds to Supreme Court’s Ruling on Bangsamoro Organic Law

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has issued a statement in response to the Supreme Court’s recent ruling upholding the constitutionality of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL). The decision, hailed as a landmark achievement, reaffirms the legal foundation and legitimacy of the BOL, which has been central to the region’s journey toward self-determination and autonomy.

In their statement, the Bangsamoro government expressed their satisfaction with the Court’s confirmation of the BOL’s validity, emphasizing that the ruling endorses the long-standing peace process and the aspirations of the Bangsamoro people. “The BOL represents more than just a legislative measure,” the statement read. “It embodies the political agreements and compromises made by various stakeholders, reflecting the collective will for a more autonomous and self-determined Bangsamoro.”

The government also commended the Court for validating the Bangsamoro parliamentary system, which is designed to enhance the region’s governance and responsiveness. “The parliamentary system is a crucial framework intended to address the needs of the Bangsamoro people more effectively,” the statement highlighted, underlining the importance of ensuring that the voices of the Bangsamoro are heard and their interests represented.

However, the statement conveyed deep concern over the Supreme Court’s decision to exclude the Province of Sulu from BARMM. The Bangsamoro government emphasized that Sulu is not only a legally integral part of the Bangsamoro but also holds significant historical and cultural ties to the region. “Sulu’s exclusion is a matter of grave concern,” the statement noted. “Sulu and its people are fundamental to the Bangsamoro identity and struggle, and their absence will leave a void in the fabric of our region.”

The Bangsamoro government pledged to thoroughly examine the implications of Sulu’s exclusion and explore all possible avenues to uphold the vision of a united Bangsamoro. “We are committed to ensuring that the principles of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro are fully realized,” the statement asserted. “Our hope remains steadfast that the unity forged through our shared history and aspirations will ultimately prevail.”

As the Bangsamoro government navigates these developments, they remain focused on maintaining the progress achieved through the peace process and working towards an inclusive future for all members of the Bangsamoro region.
