As part of National Autism Consciousness Week, SM City Davao, in collaboration with the Autism Society Philippines (ASP) – Davao Chapter, illuminated its commitment to inclusivity through the “Lights Up, Sounds Down” initiative on January 17, 2025. The event catered to the autism community by providing a sensory-friendly environment where over 300 participants, including children on the autism spectrum and their families, experienced a day filled with warmth, joy, and understanding.

A Heartwarming Initiative Across SM Malls
This celebration of inclusivity extended beyond Davao, with SM Cares, SM Cinema, ASP, and GMA Pictures hosting sensory-friendly screenings of the award-winning film Firefly across 10 SM malls. More than 2,000 participants joined these screenings, marking a significant milestone in fostering an inclusive space for the autism community.

The screenings, designed with adjusted lighting and sound levels, created a comfortable atmosphere for attendees. Children were free to move, vocalize, and engage with the film on their own terms, making the experience both enriching and memorable.
Voices of Gratitude
“Tuwing pumapasok kami sa mga SM malls, damang-dama namin ang acceptance, accommodation, at appreciation. It is the norm here,” shared ASP Chair Emerita Dang Uy Koe. This sentiment underscores the meaningful impact of initiatives like “Lights Up, Sounds Down” in creating spaces where individuals with autism and their families feel genuinely welcomed.
Fostering a Culture of Inclusion
The success of this event is a testament to SM’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity. According to Engr. Bien Mateo, SM Cares Program Director for Disability Affairs, “At SM Supermalls, we firmly believe that creating spaces where every individual feels valued, respected, and included is a responsibility we hold dearly. This is a way of life here.”
The initiative highlighted the importance of understanding and accommodating the unique needs of individuals on the autism spectrum. Parents expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the thoughtful adjustments that made the experience enjoyable and stress-free for their children.
Beyond Events: A Holistic Approach
SM’s dedication to inclusivity goes beyond one-day events. Through ongoing employee training programs, SM equips its workforce to better support individuals on the autism spectrum. Moreover, SM Cinema’s accessibility features ensure that every moviegoer feels welcome.
A Broader Mission
SM Cares, the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of SM Prime Holdings, is steadfast in its mission to champion inclusion and community support. Its programs extend to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), the environment, women and breastfeeding mothers, children and youth, senior citizens, and bike-friendly initiatives. This comprehensive approach reflects SM’s vision of a society where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
Inclusion as a Shared Responsibility
The “Lights Up, Sounds Down” initiative serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of shared efforts in building a more inclusive society. By celebrating the unique qualities of individuals on the autism spectrum and creating spaces tailored to their needs, SM Supermalls, in partnership with ASP and other stakeholders, is paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.
