Patikul, Sulu – On January 8, 2025, the Sulu Maritime Police Station (MARPSTA), in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, successfully intercepted PHP4.8 million worth of smuggled cigarettes during an operation in Barangay Tanduh Bagua, Patikul.

Acting on intelligence reports about smuggling activities in the area, authorities confiscated 55 master cases containing 27,500 packs of cigarettes. The seized items lacked the required graphic health warnings and Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) documentary stamps, a violation of government regulations.

The confiscated cigarettes included various brands such as Gift, Astro, B&R, Cannon, D&B, and Deputy, with a market value of approximately PHP3,162,500. Additionally, the smuggling activity deprived the government of an estimated PHP1,650,000 in taxes, raising the total value of the operation to over PHP4,812,500.

During the operation, a minor identified by the alias ‘Den’ was found at the scene. Authorities allege that ‘Den’ was hired as a lookout by two individuals, known only as ‘Jam’ and ‘Ali,’ who managed to evade capture and remain at large. The minor has since been turned over to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office for proper care and disposition.

The confiscated cigarettes are currently secured at the Sulu MARPSTA headquarters for proper documentation and further investigation.

Authorities continue to pursue leads to apprehend the suspects and crack down on smuggling activities in the region. They reiterated their commitment to enforcing laws and protecting government revenue.

This operation underscores the government’s intensified efforts to combat smuggling and safeguard public health by ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
