KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines – In a daring but unsuccessful heist, unidentified suspects broke into the Gaisano Grand Mall in Kidapawan City on the night of December 9, 2024, using the mall’s drainage system as their point of entry.

Authorities revealed that the culprits accessed the drainage canal outside the mall and used tools such as saws and jackhammers to force their way into the premises. Despite their efforts to open a vault in a jewelry shop and gain access to other areas, the suspects failed to steal any valuable items, as confirmed by initial inventory reports from mall tenants.

A backpack containing tools, including saws and concrete-breaking equipment, was recovered from the drainage canal, believed to have been left by the perpetrators.

Minimal Security Raises Concerns
The incident has raised questions about the mall’s security measures. Only five guards were reportedly assigned to secure the mall’s perimeter at night, with no personnel stationed inside. The mall management is now coordinating with the police, who are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the suspects.

Mayor Evangelista Issues Statement
Kidapawan City Mayor Atty. Jose Paolo Evangelista visited the crime scene and provided updates on the ongoing investigation. In an official statement, the mayor confirmed that at least four suspects were involved and reiterated the city’s commitment to pursuing justice.

“I commend the quick response of the Kidapawan City Police Station led by PLt.Col. Jun Palgan. A reward of P100,000 is being offered to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the suspects,” said Mayor Evangelista.

Investigation Continues
The Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) is conducting a thorough examination of the area, and an inventory of tenant losses is ongoing. The mall remains closed to the public while authorities assess the damage and ensure security measures are strengthened to prevent similar incidents.

While no significant losses were reported, the attempt underscores the need for enhanced security protocols in major commercial establishments. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any information that could aid the investigation.

This developing story will be updated as new details emerge.
