TALITAY, Maguindanao del Norte — A prolonged exchange of gunfire involving high-powered firearms rocked the vicinity of the residence of Talitay Mayor Sidik Ameril on the evening of November 3, raising fears among his family and nearby residents and prompting several families to temporarily flee their homes.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 8 p.m. and lasted approximately 10 to 15 minutes, according to information provided about the attack. The circumstances surrounding the exchange of gunfire, including the identities of those involved and the exact sequence of events, have yet to be independently established.
Political tension was cited as a possible motive behind the incident, although no official investigation findings have been presented to establish who was responsible or whether the attack was politically motivated.
Several residents reportedly evacuated their homes out of fear for their safety but returned the following morning after the situation appeared to have stabilized.
Mayor Ameril said he had previously received threats in connection with his position as municipal chief executive. However, he described the latest incident as particularly alarming because of the length of the exchange of gunfire, which he said was among the longest he had experienced.
The mayor directly appealed to those allegedly behind the incident to stop actions that could destabilize Talitay, warning against dragging innocent civilians into political disputes.
He stressed that the 2028 elections remain far off and that political ambitions should never become a justification for violence, intimidation, or the disruption of ordinary community life.
Ameril challenged those who intend to participate in the next elections to demonstrate their intentions through responsible conduct and peaceful political engagement rather than resorting to armed intimidation.
“Ang gusto ko lang naman ay mawala na ang kaguluhan sa Talitay,” the mayor said, expressing his desire to see lasting peace restored in the municipality.
Mayor seeks stronger military and police presence
Following the incident, Ameril called on the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Army to strengthen security operations and visibility throughout the municipality to prevent similar incidents and protect civilians.
He also urged residents to remain calm but vigilant and immediately report suspicious movements, threats, or other security concerns to the police, military, or local government.
The mayor likewise appealed to Bangsamoro Government Chief Minister Macacua to give particular attention to Talitay’s peace and security situation, emphasizing that armed incidents have direct consequences for the safety, livelihood, and daily activities of ordinary residents.
He assured the public that the situation in the municipality was under control and that residents could gradually resume their normal activities while security monitoring continued.
The local government also urged the public to avoid circulating unverified information that could aggravate tensions or create unnecessary panic.
Development priorities tied to peace and stability
Beyond the immediate security concerns, Ameril expressed optimism over the election of Chief Minister Macacua, describing it as an opportunity for Talitay to advance its development priorities, particularly because the municipality is part of the chief minister’s district.
During their courtesy call, the mayor said they discussed potential government projects that could improve local infrastructure and strengthen the livelihood of residents.
Among the priorities he raised were improvements to the municipality’s irrigation system and stronger peace-and-order initiatives.
Ameril said the municipal government could submit formal request letters to the Bangsamoro Government to communicate Talitay’s development needs and seek assistance for projects that would benefit its communities.
The latest gunfire incident, however, underscores the continuing challenge of maintaining peace and public security in the municipality.
For residents, the immediate concern goes beyond political rivalries: it is the ability to live, work, and move around their communities without fear of armed violence.
While the mayor has assured the public that the situation has stabilized, the circumstances behind the reported shooting remain subject to investigation and independent verification.
