A representative from the Regional Project Coordination Office 9 (RPCO 9) actively took part in the “Advanced Seaweed Value Chain” program, an initiative organized by the World Bank’s AquaInvest Platform. Supported by the Korea-World Bank Partnership Facility (KWPF) and PROBLUE, this international platform convened industry stakeholders to share innovations and best practices in seaweed aquaculture.

Engr. Brandon M. Mentolaroc, I-PLAN Component Head of RPCO 9, represented the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) at the event. The program spotlighted South Korea’s successful seaweed industry, providing an opportunity for knowledge exchange among leaders from government ministries, private enterprises, and academic institutions. Participants explored ways to build sustainable and profitable seaweed value chains through international collaboration.

Seaweed is a priority commodity for Region 9, included in its Provincial Commodity Investment Plan (PCIP) for its significant economic potential. DA-PRDP has already implemented five seaweed subprojects in Zamboanga del Sur, focusing on enhancing production and marketing. These projects have bolstered the local seaweed industry, creating new opportunities for farmers and other stakeholders in the region.

The program in South Korea offered a comprehensive view of the country’s thriving seaweed aquaculture, emphasizing key factors that contributed to its success. Government policies, private-sector innovations, and academic research were showcased as crucial elements of South Korea’s industry growth. Participants engaged in advanced farming techniques, visited operational aquaculture sites, toured state-of-the-art processing facilities, and participated in technical lectures and hands-on activities.

The exchange underscored the value of international partnerships in advancing evidence-based strategies for the Philippine seaweed value chain. Networking with Korean experts, researchers, and entrepreneurs opened doors for collaboration and innovation, equipping participants with actionable insights to strengthen the regional seaweed industry.

“This program has provided us with valuable perspectives and tools to enhance the competitiveness of Region 9’s seaweed industry,” said Engr. Mentolaroc. “It is an opportunity to empower local stakeholders and position our seaweed producers in the global market.”

Through initiatives like this, DA-PRDP reaffirms its dedication to leveraging global expertise to drive rural development and champion sustainable livelihoods. Armed with the learnings from South Korea’s seaweed sector, RPCO 9 is set to advance regional growth and contribute to the global seaweed market.
