DIPOLOG CITY—Fifty Olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) sea turtle hatchlings were released into the sea at Dipolog Boulevard at approximately 6:00 a.m. on December 2, 2024. This marks the first release of hatchlings for the current pawikan season.

The Olive ridley sea turtle is classified as a “vulnerable species,” highlighting the need for intensified conservation efforts. In response, the local government of Dipolog has strengthened its initiatives to protect sea turtles nesting along the city’s coastlines. These efforts ensure the safekeeping of turtle eggs until they hatch and guarantee the safe release of hatchlings back into their natural habitat.
Public Involvement Encouraged
The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City ENRO) continues to call on the public to report sightings of nesting sea turtles. Community participation is crucial in safeguarding these marine creatures and their nesting grounds from potential threats.
This conservation activity underscores Dipolog City’s commitment to marine biodiversity protection and emphasizes the shared responsibility of preserving the natural heritage for future generations. The successful release of these hatchlings is a significant step in sustaining the Olive ridley population in the region.
As the pawikan season unfolds, similar activities are expected to follow, reflecting the city’s ongoing dedication to protecting vulnerable marine species.
