MATI CITY, Davao Oriental — The Mati City Police Station (Mati CPS) has issued a clarification following a Facebook post questioning the alleged improper parking of a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) patrol vehicle in the city, saying the positioning occurred during a police response to a commotion that required immediate intervention.

In its clarification, the police station said the incident took place under circumstances that required officers to respond promptly and help control the situation. The SWAT patrol car was reportedly positioned using a tactical maneuver known as combat parking, with its emergency lights activated.

According to the Mati CPS, the vehicle’s positioning was intended to help secure the surrounding area and protect the safety of people present at the scene.

The police stressed that the maneuver was undertaken in response to the demands of the situation, rather than to deliberately violate traffic regulations or inconvenience other motorists.

Police cite operational circumstances

The clarification comes after a social media post circulated showing the SWAT patrol car in a position that a netizen described as improper. The photograph prompted questions about the appropriate use of public roads and the responsibility of law enforcement personnel to observe traffic rules while carrying out their duties.

However, the police station emphasized that the circumstances surrounding an emergency response should be considered when assessing the positioning of a patrol vehicle.

The Mati CPS urged the public to consider the full context of an incident before drawing conclusions based solely on a photograph or limited information shared online.

While the police explanation provides its account of the circumstances, the available statement does not identify the specific commotion that prompted the response, the exact location of the vehicle, or whether the positioning was independently reviewed against applicable traffic and operational procedures.

Public concerns over police accountability

The incident highlights the challenge of balancing the operational needs of law enforcement with public expectations for responsible and professional conduct on the road.

Police vehicles responding to emergencies may need to be positioned strategically to secure an area, facilitate intervention, or protect people nearby. At the same time, the use of emergency lights and the urgency of a response do not, by themselves, establish whether every aspect of a vehicle’s positioning complied with applicable rules and procedures.

The circumstances of each incident, including the nature of the emergency and the need to secure the scene, remain relevant in determining whether a particular maneuver was justified.

The Mati CPS acknowledged public concerns about the proper positioning of patrol vehicles during police operations and reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and order, protecting lives and property, and delivering honest, responsible, and professional public service.

Police urge responsible social media use

The police station also called on the public to exercise responsibility when sharing information on social media, warning that incomplete accounts or images without sufficient context can lead to misunderstandings.

The appeal comes amid the growing role of social media in documenting public incidents and prompting questions about the conduct of government personnel.

While photographs and videos can help bring public concerns to light, establishing what happened requires consideration of the circumstances before, during, and after an incident.

The Mati CPS said it would continue serving and protecting the community while prioritizing public safety and observing the law and established law enforcement procedures.

The station reiterated its commitment to responding to emergencies, maintaining peace and security, and working with the community.
