SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte — Authorities intercepted a transport vehicle allegedly carrying exotic and protected wildlife, a 9mm pistol, and other contraband with a combined estimated value of ₱3.301 million during a joint interdiction operation at Gate 5 of the Port of Surigao on Friday, September 18, 2026.
The operation was conducted by personnel of the Regional Maritime Unit 13 (RMU 13), Surigao del Norte Maritime Police Station (MARPSTA), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Port Police.
Authorities said the intercepted shipment included several exotic wildlife species, among them White Cockatoos, Red-Footed Tortoises, Leopard Tortoises, and other protected species.
The wildlife was estimated to have a combined value of approximately ₱2.066 million, according to authorities.
A 9mm pistol was also recovered during the operation, adding a firearms-related offense to the case being built against the individuals involved.
Two individuals, identified as representatives of JPV Pet Transport and Logistics, were arrested during the interdiction operation.
The interception highlights the continuing efforts of maritime and environmental authorities to prevent the illegal movement of protected wildlife through ports and other transportation hubs in Mindanao.
Following the operation, the arrested individuals were brought to the Regional Maritime Unit 13 for documentation and processing.
The confiscated wildlife, meanwhile, was turned over to the DENR for appropriate care, assessment, and disposition in accordance with existing wildlife protection laws and regulations.
Authorities are now conducting inquest proceedings in connection with the alleged violation of Republic Act No. 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.
RA 9147 provides legal protection to wildlife species and regulates activities involving their possession, transport, collection, and trade, particularly when undertaken without the required permits and documentation.
The presence of a firearm in the intercepted vehicle is also expected to be subject to separate investigation and appropriate legal action based on the circumstances and documentation of the seizure.
Authorities have yet to disclose further details regarding the source of the wildlife, its intended destination, and whether the animals were being transported with valid permits or other required documents.
The case remains under investigation, while the arrested individuals are expected to face the appropriate charges based on the results of the inquest proceedings and further examination of the seized items.
