TAGANAAN, Surigao del Norte — Four individuals were apprehended by Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel after they were allegedly caught conducting illegal fishing using an air compressor locally known as “boso” in the waters off Sitio California, Barangay Opong, Taganaan, Surigao del Norte.
The apprehension took place at around 11:30 p.m. on September 17, 2026, during a seaborne patrol conducted by the Coast Guard Sub-Station Tagana-an in coordination with the Maritime Law Enforcement Group – Northeastern Mindanao.
The joint operating team was aboard PCG Aluminum Boat 252 when they encountered the four individuals allegedly engaged in the prohibited fishing activity.
According to the Coast Guard, the individuals were caught in the act of using an air compressor, locally referred to as a “boso,” in their fishing operation.
The operating team immediately secured the prohibited fishing paraphernalia and recovered the motorbanca allegedly used in the activity.
The four apprehended individuals, together with the recovered boat and fishing equipment, were subsequently brought to the Coast Guard Sub-Station Taganaan for inventory, documentation and investigation.
The Coast Guard then coordinated with the Taganaan Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) for the proper disposition of the case.
The apprehended individuals and the confiscated fishing paraphernalia were formally turned over to the concerned municipal office. According to the PCG, corresponding fines and penalties were imposed in accordance with the existing municipal ordinance.
The operation underscores the continuing efforts of maritime authorities to monitor coastal waters and prevent prohibited fishing activities that could threaten marine ecosystems and undermine the livelihood of legitimate fisherfolk.
Illegal fishing can place additional pressure on already vulnerable fishing grounds by contributing to the depletion of marine resources and damaging the ecological balance upon which coastal communities depend.
For communities such as Taganaan, the protection of fishing waters is closely tied to food security and household income. Many families rely on the sea as a primary source of livelihood, making the sustainable management of marine resources a critical concern.
The nighttime patrol also demonstrates the importance of sustained maritime law enforcement. Regular monitoring allows authorities to detect prohibited activities and respond to violations occurring in coastal waters.
The Philippine Coast Guard said it remains committed to enforcing maritime laws and regulations while protecting the country’s aquatic and marine ecosystems.
The agency also emphasized its responsibility to safeguard the livelihood of legitimate fisherfolk and promote the sustainable use of marine resources.
