SURIGAO CITY, Philippines — Sixteen individuals were arrested during a maritime operation conducted by the Regional Maritime Unit 13 (RMU13) in the waters off Barangay Day-asan, Surigao City, on September 15, 2026, after authorities reportedly caught them actively engaged in fishing using improvised diving equipment and an air compressor without the required documents from the proper authorities.
According to RMU13, its personnel were conducting a seaborne operation in the coastal waters of Barangay Day-asan when they encountered the 16 individuals allegedly engaged in fishing activities using improvised diving equipment powered by an air compressor.
Authorities said the individuals failed to present the appropriate permits or other required documentation authorizing their fishing activities and the use of the equipment.
The operation also resulted in the confiscation of several pieces of evidence, including the boats allegedly used in the fishing activity, various fishing equipment, and fish reportedly caught during the operation.
The confiscated items are expected to form part of the evidence in the appropriate proceedings involving the apprehended individuals. The specific charges and the final disposition of the case will depend on the findings of authorities and the applicable fisheries and maritime laws and regulations.
