CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — A 21-year-old engineering student from Surigao who was temporarily staying in Cagayan de Oro City was found dead on Saturday afternoon, September 5, in what police are investigating as an apparent suicide.
The victim, identified as alias “James,” a resident of Surigao, was reportedly staying at Lapaz 1, Barangay Lapasan, where he was pursuing his engineering studies at a major university in the city.
Police said James was also working as a merchandiser at a grocery establishment in the Capistrano Complex while continuing his studies.
According to Police Station 3 Agora, under PMsg. Manuel Zumel Jr., a concerned individual, identified as Ms. Jingle, contacted authorities at around 1:40 p.m. on September 5 after reportedly receiving information about an alleged suicide involving James at his boarding house in Lapaz 1, Barangay Lapasan.
Police immediately responded to the area and conducted an initial investigation. Authorities reported that James was already deceased when they arrived.
PMsg. Zumel said investigators also inspected the area and found no apparent indication of foul play during their initial examination. The circumstances surrounding the death, however, remain subject to the appropriate investigation.
Police said they also learned that James had apparently been dealing with emotional difficulties. A personal note reportedly found among his belongings provided an indication of his state of mind before his death.
According to the note, James was distressed after his cellphone was stolen. The note also contained expressions of gratitude and appreciation for his aunt, who had reportedly cared for him for two years.
The message reportedly included an apology to his aunt and appreciation for the support she had given him while he was pursuing his studies and working in the city.
James was reportedly a student in an engineering course and had been hoping to finish his degree. At the time of his death, he was also working to support himself while continuing his education.
His death has left those who knew him facing the loss of a young man who was reportedly trying to balance his education and employment while dealing with personal difficulties.
The victim’s remains were later brought to a funeral home, where arrangements were being made by his family and relatives.
Depression is a serious issue
The incident also underscores the importance of recognizing depression and other mental health struggles as serious concerns that require understanding, compassion and timely support.
Depression is more than ordinary sadness. A person experiencing depression may struggle with overwhelming emotions, hopelessness, isolation or problems that may not always be visible to family members, friends, classmates or co-workers. Young people balancing academic, financial, family and personal pressures can be particularly vulnerable when they feel unable to cope with their circumstances.
