ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Two people have been confirmed dead following a shooting at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) Junior High School campus in Barangay Tumaga, Zamboanga City, on Tuesday morning, August 18, 2026, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The confirmed fatalities include the suspected shooter, who authorities have identified as a Grade 7 student of the school, and another student. Earlier reports circulating online had placed the death toll at four, but the Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) and the university confirmed that two fatalities had been recorded.
The incident has also drawn attention to the suspect’s family background. Initial information indicates that the student is the son of a Customs Police chief in Zamboanga City, raising questions about how the firearms allegedly used in the shooting were accessed and brought onto the school premises.
The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has separately taken administrative action against the Customs Police personnel identified in connection with the firearms, ordering his relief and preventive suspension pending investigation.
Authorities, however, have yet to establish the complete circumstances of how the student obtained access to the firearms. Investigators are expected to determine whether the weapons were properly secured and how they were brought into the school.
Shooting reported during school hours
The shooting was reported at the AdZU campus at around 8:20 a.m., while classes were underway.
The Philippine National Police, through the Police Regional Office 9 and the Zamboanga City Police Office, immediately responded to the campus and coordinated with school officials and other emergency agencies.
Zamboanga City Police Office Director PCol. Fidel Fortaleza said the situation had already been brought under control, with authorities determining that there was no longer an active threat.
Police secured the campus as students, teachers and school personnel were assisted out of the affected areas. Parents and guardians also rushed to the school to fetch their children.
The PNP urged parents and guardians to remain calm and follow the school’s instructions during the orderly release of students while police and investigators carried out security and forensic procedures.
Suspect confirmed as Grade 7 student
Unlike earlier reports that contained conflicting information about the suspect’s grade level, subsequent information identified the suspected shooter as a Grade 7 student enrolled at Ateneo de Zamboanga University.
The student was among the two fatalities recorded in the incident.
Authorities are continuing to reconstruct the sequence of events, including the movements of the suspect inside the campus, the individuals who were targeted, and how the firearms entered the school.
Reports indicate that authorities recovered two firearms believed to have been used during the incident.
The exact motive remains subject to investigation.
Online game angle being examined
An additional angle being raised in the initial investigation concerns the suspect’s reported exposure to an online game.
Initial information circulating in connection with the incident indicates that the shooting may have been inspired or influenced by an online game, although authorities have not yet established a definitive causal connection between the game and the student’s actions.
Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso has also publicly raised the issue of violent online games in discussing possible factors surrounding the incident. However, whether gaming actually influenced the student’s decision to carry out the shooting remains a matter for investigators to establish.
The online-game angle should therefore be treated as an initial investigative lead rather than an established motive.
Investigators are expected to examine the student’s online activity and other circumstances that may help explain what preceded the attack.
Two fatalities officially confirmed
The incident initially generated confusion because of rapidly spreading social media posts claiming that four people had been killed and several others wounded.
The CDRRMO subsequently clarified that two people were confirmed dead, while two others were transported to a hospital. One of those brought to the hospital was reportedly wounded, while another was experiencing shortness of breath.
Medical teams also attended to 21 students who experienced panic, anxiety or minor abrasions following the incident.
Officials have repeatedly urged the public to rely only on verified information from authorities, the university, hospitals and other legitimate sources.
The university also appealed to the public to respect the privacy of the affected students and their families, particularly because minors are involved.
School suspends classes, declares day of mourning
Following the shooting, AdZU suspended classes on Tuesday and declared Wednesday, August 19, as a day of mourning for the school community.
The university said it was coordinating with authorities and parents and guardians to ensure the safe departure of students from campus.
AdZU President Fr. Ernald Andal said the university would await the verified findings of the Zamboanga City Police Office and the Regional Forensic Unit 9/Scene of the Crime Operatives.
The school has emphasized that the safety and welfare of its students remain its priority.
Customs chief relieved, suspended over firearms issue
The Bureau of Customs also moved to take administrative action after information emerged that the firearms allegedly used in the shooting were connected to a Customs Police personnel.
BOC Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno ordered the relief and preventive suspension of the Customs Police personnel identified as the owner of the firearms allegedly used by the student, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The bureau also directed a review of relevant records and instructed concerned personnel to cooperate with investigators.
The BOC said it would conduct a comprehensive accounting and inventory of issued firearms and review compliance with existing rules covering firearm custody, storage, transport, carrying and safekeeping.
The administrative proceedings are separate from the criminal, forensic and school-based investigations into the shooting.
Authorities investigating access to firearms
One of the central questions now facing investigators is how a Grade 7 student was able to gain access to firearms and bring them onto a school campus.
The student’s connection to a Customs Police official makes the issue of firearm custody and safekeeping a significant part of the investigation, although authorities have yet to release a complete account of how the weapons came into the student’s possession.
Investigators are expected to examine firearm ownership documents, storage procedures, access to the weapons, security footage and other evidence as they establish the chain of events.
The investigation will also seek to determine whether any administrative or legal violations occurred in relation to the storage, handling or unauthorized access to the firearms.
Authorities continue forensic and criminal investigation
Police and forensic investigators continue to process evidence from the campus and establish the complete circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Among the key questions being investigated are how the firearms entered the school, how the shooting unfolded, who was targeted, what circumstances preceded the incident, and whether the suspect’s reported online activity played any role.
Authorities are also expected to examine the student’s digital footprint and other possible contributing factors without prematurely assigning responsibility to any single influence.
The reported online-game connection, in particular, remains an investigative angle and has not been established as the sole or definitive cause of the shooting.
The tragedy has also renewed concerns about school security, firearm access, student welfare, online exposure among minors and the need for responsible reporting of incidents involving children.
Authorities and school officials have appealed to the public not to circulate graphic videos, photographs or unverified claims that could further traumatize victims and their families or interfere with the investigation.
For now, two fatalities remain officially confirmed. The suspect has been identified as a Grade 7 student of the school and is reportedly the son of a Customs Police chief in Zamboanga City. Investigators continue to determine how the firearms were obtained, how they entered the campus and what factors—including the reported online-game influence—may have contributed to the shooting.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to release additional verified information as the forensic and criminal inquiries progress.
