BUUG, Zamboanga Sibugay — A man identified as Jayboy Rivera was shot dead in broad daylight while traveling aboard a rickshaw in Purok 1, Barangay Mabuhay, Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay, on August 12, 2026.

The shooting occurred at around 2:25 p.m., according to the Buug Municipal Police Station (Buug MPS).

Police said Rivera had gone to the area after reportedly being hired for a “pakyaw” or chartered trip. While he was traveling along the area, a resident reportedly heard a gunshot and subsequently found Rivera lying along the roadside.

The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

Police personnel immediately responded to the scene, together with personnel from the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Buug (LDRRMO-Buug). The victim was provided assistance and transported to a hospital for emergency medical treatment.

However, Rivera was later declared dead on arrival (DOA) by the attending physician.

Authorities have yet to establish the circumstances that led to the shooting, including the motive and the identity of the person responsible.

The Buug MPS said its investigation remains ongoing as police continue to gather physical evidence and statements from potential witnesses who may help establish what happened before, during, and after the shooting.

Investigators are also working to determine whether Rivera was specifically targeted and to establish the circumstances surrounding the trip that brought him to the area shortly before the incident.

As of the latest information available, no suspect has been identified or arrested in connection with the killing.

Police are urging individuals who may have witnessed the shooting or have information that could assist the investigation to coordinate with authorities.

The case remains under investigation, and police said further details will be released as information and evidence are verified.
