BUUG, Zamboanga Sibugay — A quiet evening turned into a scene of horror after a grandmother was shot dead inside her own home while tending to her infant grandchild on the night of April 21, 2026, authorities said.

The fatal shooting occurred at around 10:46 p.m. in Purok 7, Barangay Bawang, in this coastal municipality, according to the Buug Municipal Police Station.
Police identified the victim as an elderly woman who sustained a gunshot wound to the head, killing her instantly.
Initial investigation revealed that the victim was inside the living area of their house, caring for her seven-month-old granddaughter and in the middle of changing the baby’s diaper when the attack happened.
Her husband, who was also inside the house watching television at the time, told investigators he was startled by the sudden sound of a gunshot. When he turned toward the direction of the noise, he was confronted with a devastating sight—his wife lying on the floor, motionless and bleeding from a head wound.
The infant, who was just beside the victim during the incident, miraculously escaped unharmed.
In a state of panic, the husband immediately secured the baby and sought help from relatives, who then alerted authorities.
Responding police officers found the victim already lifeless upon arrival. Scene-of-the-crime operatives have since conducted an initial forensic examination, while investigators are now working to determine how the assailant carried out the attack and whether the gunman acted alone.
As of this writing, authorities have yet to identify any suspects or establish a clear motive behind the killing.
Police Major Pocholo Rolando C. Guerrero, chief of the Buug Municipal Police Station, said a thorough and ongoing investigation is underway to track down the perpetrator and bring those responsible to justice.
The brazen killing, carried out inside the supposed safety of a home and in the presence of a child, has sent shockwaves across the community, raising concerns over security and the apparent boldness of the attacker.
Authorities are urging anyone with information that could aid in the investigation to come forward.
