ZAMBOANGA CITY – The swift response and courage of Philippine Air Force (PAF) Reservists and six Air Reserve Center (ARCEN) personnel averted a potential tragedy after they rescued several teachers whose motorized boat sank in the waters off Sacol Island on Sunday.
The teachers were traveling from the Annex Campus of Manicahan National High School when their boat reportedly developed engine trouble while crossing the waters near Sacol Island. As the situation deteriorated, the passengers transferred to a smaller boat in an effort to continue their journey.
However, the smaller vessel could not safely accommodate everyone, leaving the teachers stranded at sea as their original boat eventually sank.
Fortunately, a larger boat carrying PAF Reservists and six Air Reserve Center (ARCEN) personnel was traveling behind them. Upon noticing the emergency, the rescue team immediately altered course and launched a rescue operation, safely transferring all of the stranded teachers aboard their vessel.
Their prompt and decisive action ensured that every teacher was brought safely to shore, with no injuries or fatalities reported.
One of the rescuers, Neriza, shared details of the incident in a social media post, recounting how they happened to be following behind the teachers when the emergency unfolded.
“Bangka lumubog sa gitna ng karagatan ng Sacol Island, mga teacher ligtas. Buti na lang nakasunod kaming mga PAF Reservist at six Air Reserve Center personnel, nasagip namin sila kaagad,” she wrote.
Although all the teachers survived the ordeal, many of their essential teaching tools—including laptops, tablets, and mobile phones—were damaged after being submerged in seawater.
“Kawawa naman mga guro. Lumubog ang bangka nila sa karagatan ng Sacol Island, Zamboanga City. Buti na lang nailigtas din namin sila kaagad, pero yung laptop, tablet at cellphone nila ay sira na. Ang importante ay buhay sila,” she added.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the mechanical failure that led to the sinking of the boat, and an investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The successful rescue has earned praise for the PAF Reservists and the six Air Reserve Center personnel, whose vigilance, readiness, and selfless response prevented a maritime emergency from turning into a tragedy. Their actions underscore the vital role of military reservists in providing immediate humanitarian assistance during emergencies and protecting lives whenever duty calls.
The incident also highlights the challenges faced by teachers assigned to island communities, many of whom rely on small boats to carry out their mission of bringing education to remote areas. While valuable equipment was lost, the safe rescue of every teacher remains the greatest victory of the day.
