ZAMBOANGA CITY – Authorities intercepted more than ₱14 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes during a pre-dawn anti-smuggling operation in Barangay Campo Islam, Zamboanga City, on July 26, 2026, dealing another significant blow to the illegal tobacco trade in Western Mindanao.
The operation was jointly conducted by operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Regional Field Unit 9, in coordination with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the Zamboanga City Police Station 11, as part of intensified efforts to curb the flow of untaxed and illegally imported tobacco products into the country.
According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), law enforcement personnel recovered an abandoned delivery van loaded with assorted suspected smuggled cigarettes after the individuals transporting the contraband fled upon noticing the approaching authorities.
Despite the suspects’ escape, authorities successfully secured the shipment, preventing it from reaching the local black market. Investigators have launched follow-up operations to identify and locate the individuals responsible for the attempted transport of the illegal goods.
Over ₱14 Million in Illegal Cigarettes Seized
Authorities recovered a total of 61 master cases and 715 reams of assorted cigarettes with an estimated market value of ₱14,081,100.00.
The seized cigarettes were immediately inventoried in the presence of barangay officials to ensure transparency and proper documentation before being prepared for turnover to the Bureau of Customs, which will handle their disposition in accordance with existing customs and anti-smuggling laws.
The operation is considered another major accomplishment in the government’s ongoing campaign against smuggling, a criminal activity that deprives the government of billions of pesos in tax revenues each year while creating unfair competition for legitimate businesses.
Intelligence-Driven Campaign Against Smuggling
The PNP said the successful operation is in line with its Focused Agenda on Enhanced Managing Police Operations, which emphasizes intelligence-driven law enforcement and stronger collaboration among government agencies in dismantling smuggling networks.
The campaign also supports the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to intensify the fight against illicit trade and strengthen revenue collection by preventing the entry and distribution of untaxed products.
PNP Chief Commends Operating Units
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. lauded the operating personnel for their swift coordination and professionalism that led to the successful recovery of the illegal shipment.
He emphasized that sustained cooperation among law enforcement agencies remains vital in disrupting organized smuggling syndicates operating in key entry points across the country.
Investigation Continues
Authorities are now conducting a comprehensive investigation to determine the identities of the suspects who abandoned the vehicle and to establish the origin and intended destination of the shipment.
The PNP assured the public that criminal charges will be pursued against all individuals involved once they are identified, stressing that operations against illicit trade will continue through close coordination with partner agencies.
Police reiterated that the campaign forms part of the “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat, at Nararamdaman” initiative, aimed at protecting communities, safeguarding lawful commerce, and ensuring that criminal enterprises engaged in smuggling are held accountable under Philippine law.
