BUTUAN CITY — An 18-year-old woman survived after allegedly attempting to take her own life by jumping from the Magsaysay Bridge into the Agusan River on Wednesday morning, prompting an immediate rescue response from concerned residents and authorities.

The incident occurred at around 8:00 to 8:30 a.m., when residents noticed a young woman suddenly plunge into the river from the approximately 25-foot-high bridge.

According to witnesses, a concerned resident saw the victim repeatedly submerge and resurface in the water before immediately rushing to help. It was only after reaching her that the rescuer learned she had jumped from the bridge.

Other residents quickly joined the rescue effort while authorities were alerted, allowing the victim to be safely pulled from the river.

Police identified the victim only by the alias “Ron,” an 18-year-old resident of Barangay Buhangin, Butuan City, withholding her full identity in accordance with ethical reporting standards involving suicide attempts.

Family Conflict Emerges During Investigation

Initial police investigation revealed that the young woman had reportedly argued with her father shortly before the incident after she was unable to attend school due to illness.

Further interviews indicated that the victim allegedly disclosed she had long been blamed by her father for the death of her mother. Investigators believe the emotional distress caused by the recurring accusations may have contributed to her decision to jump from the bridge.

Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing to fully determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Receiving Medical Care and Psychosocial Support

Following the rescue, the victim was immediately brought to a hospital for medical treatment. Reports later confirmed that she is now in stable condition.

After receiving initial medical attention, she was turned over to the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) for appropriate psychosocial intervention, counseling, and further assistance to help address her emotional and mental well-being.

Authorities said they will continue coordinating with the victim and her family to ensure she receives the necessary support.

A Reminder on Mental Health

The incident serves as a sobering reminder that many people may be silently struggling with emotional pain that is not immediately visible to others. Mental health advocates continue to encourage individuals experiencing overwhelming stress, grief, or emotional distress to seek help from trusted family members, friends, counselors, religious leaders, or mental health professionals.

If you or someone you know is experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide, know that help is available. Reaching out to someone you trust or contacting a mental health professional can make a life-saving difference.

The Mindanao Sentinel expresses its concern for the young woman and hopes for her complete physical and emotional recovery. We also encourage compassion, understanding, and open conversations about mental health, reminding everyone that no one should have to face life’s struggles alone.
