ZAMBOANGA CITY — A tragic shooting incident involving a married couple who were both members of the Philippine Marines shocked the military community after it unfolded inside the Marine Brigade Artillery Area (MBAA) Camp in Barangay Cabatangan, Zamboanga City.

Authorities identified the victims as SSgt. Julie Ann Arsaga Santillan, 37, and her husband, SSgt. Dante Santillan, both active-duty personnel of the Philippine Marines.

According to initial findings of the Philippine National Police (PNP), investigators are treating the incident as a possible murder-suicide after evidence suggested that the husband allegedly shot his wife before turning the firearm on himself.

The shooting reportedly occurred within the premises of the Field Artillery Battalion in Barangay Cabatangan.

Police said SSgt. Julie Ann, who served as a liaison officer of the Field Artillery Battalion, sustained three gunshot wounds—one to the head and two to the body—which caused her immediate death.

SSgt. Dante, who was assigned to the 18th Marine Company in Zambales, suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was initially rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.

Peace and Order Committee Chairman Fred Atilano confirmed that Julie Ann was declared dead at the scene, while her husband was still alive when responders transported him to a medical facility.

Heated Argument Before the Shooting

Investigators revealed that the couple allegedly engaged in a heated argument shortly before the shooting occurred.

Authorities are pursuing multiple angles in their investigation, including reports that the couple had been experiencing personal and financial conflicts.

Based on information gathered by investigators, one possible source of tension involved a tricycle owned by the family. Reports indicated that Dante allegedly wanted to sell the vehicle, while Julie Ann preferred obtaining a loan instead of disposing of the asset.

The disagreement reportedly escalated amid other unresolved personal issues, leading investigators to consider financial problems as one of the possible factors behind the tragedy.

Police, however, emphasized that these details remain part of an ongoing investigation and have yet to be conclusively established as the motive.

Military Community Mourns

The deaths of the two Marines have sent shockwaves through both the military and local communities, with colleagues and residents expressing grief over the loss of the couple.

Authorities have yet to release further details regarding the firearm used in the incident and whether additional witnesses were present when the shooting occurred.

The Philippine National Police continues to coordinate with military officials as they conduct a thorough investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and establish the definitive motive behind the deadly shooting.

As of this writing, authorities are awaiting the completion of forensic examinations, witness interviews, and other investigative procedures to shed more light on one of the most tragic incidents to occur within a military installation in Zamboanga City in recent years.
