PANTAR, Lanao del Norte — Authorities intercepted and confiscated 536 reams of alleged smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately ₱428,800 during a joint checkpoint operation conducted at the Pantar Regional Border Control Point in Barangay Campong, Pantar, Lanao del Norte, on June 19, 2026.

The operation was spearheaded by personnel of the 1005th Maneuver Company of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 10 (RMFB-10), serving as the lead unit, in coordination with the Pantar Municipal Police Station as part of ongoing efforts to curb the movement of illicit goods across provincial borders.

According to authorities, the contraband was discovered inside a Mitsubishi L300 van that was flagged down for inspection at the checkpoint. During the verification process, the vehicle’s occupants reportedly failed to present the necessary legal documents proving the lawful transport and ownership of the cigarette products.

Further examination revealed that the seized cigarettes bore no government-mandated health warning stickers, a key indicator that the products may have entered the country illegally and evaded the payment of taxes and duties required under Philippine law.

Initial investigation indicated that the shipment was allegedly being transported from Marawi City and was bound for Iligan City when it was intercepted by law enforcement personnel.

The individuals apprehended during the operation were brought to the Pantar Municipal Police Station for proper documentation and further investigation. Authorities have yet to release additional details regarding the identities of the suspects and the possible filing of charges.

Meanwhile, the confiscated cigarette products will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for verification, inventory, and appropriate legal disposition in accordance with existing customs and anti-smuggling regulations.

Law enforcement officials emphasized that the successful interception underscores the effectiveness of intensified border security measures and inter-agency cooperation in combating the illegal trade of untaxed and smuggled goods.

Authorities noted that cigarette smuggling continues to pose significant challenges to government revenue collection and public health regulations, as illicit tobacco products often bypass taxation requirements and mandatory health labeling standards.

The seizure forms part of the government’s broader campaign against smuggling activities in Northern Mindanao, with security forces maintaining heightened vigilance at strategic checkpoints to prevent the movement and distribution of illegal products.

Officials reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining anti-smuggling operations and strengthening border control efforts to protect consumers, safeguard legitimate businesses, and uphold the country’s customs and taxation laws.
