MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon — A 28-year-old Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) was found dead inside the Bukidnon Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (PDRC) in Barangay Casisang, Malaybalay City, in the early hours of June 13, 2026, in what authorities believe was a case of suicide.

The victim, identified only as Marven, a resident of Barangay Kaatuan in the municipality of Lantapan, Bukidnon, was discovered at around 3:13 a.m. inside Cell Number 6 of the provincial detention facility located in Purok 10, Natid-asan.
According to a report from the Malaybalay City Police Station, authorities received information about the incident from the jail warden of the PDRC. Responding officers immediately conducted an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the inmate’s death.
Initial findings revealed that Marven was found hanging inside the comfort room of the detention facility using a shoelace. He was reportedly discovered by a fellow inmate, who immediately removed the ligature before finding him lying motionless on the floor.
Investigators said the victim had been detained at the facility since January 21, 2026, while facing two criminal cases pending before the court.
Further examination of his personal belongings reportedly uncovered torn pieces of clothing, which authorities believe may have been intended for use in an earlier or alternative attempt to take his own life.
Fellow detainees described Marven as a quiet individual who often kept to himself and rarely socialized with other inmates. While investigators have yet to establish a definitive motive, his behavior inside the facility has become part of the ongoing inquiry into the circumstances leading to his death.
Police emphasized that, based on their initial investigation, there were no indications of foul play or external injuries suggesting the involvement of other individuals.
The incident has raised concerns about the mental and emotional well-being of persons deprived of liberty, particularly those facing prolonged detention and legal uncertainty. Correctional facilities across the country have increasingly been encouraged to strengthen mental health monitoring and psychosocial support mechanisms for inmates who may be experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, or other psychological challenges while in custody.
Authorities continue to conduct a thorough investigation and coordinate with detention officials to complete the documentation and procedural requirements surrounding the case.
The remains of the victim were subsequently turned over to his family, while the Bukidnon Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center is expected to review its internal monitoring procedures following the incident.
